Alfalfa vs Berseem Clover: The Short Answer

If you need one forage to carry a herd for several years on good, well-drained land, alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is the better crop. It delivers higher crude protein, survives heat and drought through a taproot that reaches several metres down, and produces from the same sowing for three to five years or longer.

If you need maximum soft green fodder in a single cool season, on heavier or less forgiving ground, and you want to be cutting within two months of sowing, berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum) is the better crop. It establishes fast, regrows well after four to six cuts, tolerates wetter and mildly saline soils, and carries the lowest bloat risk of the common clovers.

The honest answer that most agronomists give, and the one we hear repeated by buyers in more than 70 countries, is that these two crops are not really competitors. They are complements. Below we compare them properly — on yield, protein, cutting schedule, soil, water, stand life and delivered cost — so you can decide which belongs on your land, and whether the right answer is both.

What Each Crop Actually Is

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

Alfalfa, known as lucerne across much of the Commonwealth and as rishka in parts of South Asia, is a perennial legume of the Fabaceae family. It has been cultivated for well over two thousand years and is often called the "queen of forages" for good reason: no other widely grown fodder combines this much protein, this much yield, and this much persistence. A mature alfalfa plant sends a taproot down two to five metres, which is exactly why it keeps producing when shallow-rooted grasses have gone brown.

Berseem Clover (Trifolium alexandrinum)

Berseem clover, also called Egyptian clover or barseem, is an annual legume that originated in the Nile Valley and became the backbone of winter fodder across Egypt, Pakistan, India and much of the Middle East. It is upright, hollow-stemmed, soft, and remarkably palatable. Where alfalfa is a long-term investment, berseem is a fast, generous, single-season crop that goes in after the summer harvest and feeds the herd right through the cool months.

Figures are typical ranges for well-managed irrigated stands and vary considerably with variety, region, cutting stage and management. Treat them as planning guidance, not guarantees.

Yield: More Per Season, or More Per Sowing?

This is where most comparisons go wrong. Read a single-season yield table and berseem clover often looks like the winner — 70 to 110 tonnes of green fodder per hectare across four to six cuts is a formidable number, and berseem achieves it in months rather than years.

But alfalfa is not a one-season crop. A well-managed alfalfa stand returning 60 to 100 tonnes per hectare per year, for four years, has produced several times what a single berseem crop delivers, from one sowing, one establishment cost and one round of land preparation. Measured per season, berseem frequently wins. Measured per sowing, or per dollar of establishment cost amortised across the life of the stand, alfalfa wins clearly.

The practical question is therefore not "which yields more" but "how long do I intend to keep this field in forage?" If the answer is one winter before the field returns to cotton, rice or maize, sow berseem. If the answer is several years, sow alfalfa.

Protein and Feed Quality

Alfalfa holds the protein crown at 18 to 22 percent crude protein on a dry matter basis, rising above 24 percent in leafy material cut at early bloom. Berseem clover sits at 16 to 20 percent. On the raw number, alfalfa wins.

Quality is more than protein, though. Berseem clover is softer, its stems stay tender longer, and its dry matter digestibility is generally higher — which means a larger share of what the animal eats is actually converted. Alfalfa stems coarsen quickly after early bloom, and a late-cut alfalfa crop can test well on protein while feeding poorly in practice. Cutting stage matters more than species here: early-cut berseem will out-feed late-cut alfalfa nearly every time.

There is one further difference that matters to graziers. Alfalfa carries a meaningful bloat risk on lush growth. Berseem clover is widely considered the lowest bloat-risk of the true clovers, which is precisely why it is grazed directly across so much of South Asia. That does not make it risk-free — feed dry roughage first and introduce animals gradually — but it is a real and practical advantage.

Soil, Water and Climate

Alfalfa is demanding about drainage and unforgiving about pH. Its taproot, the very feature that gives it drought tolerance, will rot in ground that stays saturated. Give alfalfa deep, free-draining soil at pH 6.5 to 7.5 and it will reward you for years. Put it on heavy, waterlogged or strongly saline land and the stand will thin out within a season or two.

Berseem clover is the more forgiving crop. It handles heavier textures, copes with short periods of standing water, and tolerates mild salinity and alkalinity that would compromise an alfalfa stand. What it will not tolerate is heat or drought — berseem needs consistent irrigation and finishes naturally as temperatures rise.

The climate split is therefore clean. Hot, dry, long summers with irrigation available favour alfalfa. Mild winters with reliable water and a summer crop occupying the field favour berseem. Across Pakistan's Sindh and Punjab, growers commonly run both in exactly this pattern.

Establishment, Companion Cropping and Rotation

Alfalfa establishes slowly. The first year is largely an investment year while the crown and taproot develop, and young alfalfa competes poorly against weeds. Berseem clover establishes fast, covers ground quickly and suppresses weeds by canopy alone.

This difference is an opportunity rather than a problem. Sowing berseem as a companion or nurse crop in the alfalfa establishment year is a well-proven practice: the berseem smothers weeds and returns cuttings of fodder while the alfalfa quietly builds the root system that will carry it for the next several years. Growers also drill berseem into thinning alfalfa in the final year of the stand to lift tonnage before renovation.

Both crops fix atmospheric nitrogen and leave the soil better than they found it — alfalfa at roughly 150 to 250 kg N per hectare per year, berseem at roughly 100 to 200 kg per season. In a rotation, berseem is particularly valued ahead of a cereal or cotton crop for exactly this reason. For both, inoculating seed with the correct Rhizobium strain at sowing is the single cheapest way to protect that nitrogen benefit.

Varieties Worth Knowing

Variety choice moves the numbers more than most growers expect.

In alfalfa, dormancy rating is the decision that matters. Non-dormant and highly non-dormant types suit hot, long-season, irrigated regions and keep producing through winter; dormant types suit cold-winter climates and go quiet until spring. Widely traded non-dormant Pakistani types such as KN92 and Taiztar are selected for exactly these warm-climate, multi-cut conditions.

In berseem clover, the split is between single-cut and multi-cut types. Fahli is a single-cut type suited to one heavy harvest or a seed crop. Mescavi and similar multi-cut types regrow reliably and are the standard choice where the goal is repeated fodder cuts through the season. Sowing a single-cut type when you wanted five cuts is a costly and entirely avoidable mistake.

Whatever you sow, ask the supplier for germination percentage, purity, year of production, and — critically for alfalfa — written confirmation that the lot is dodder-free. Dodder (Cuscuta) is a parasitic weed that spreads through contaminated seed lots and is a quarantine issue in many importing countries.

Cost: Look at Delivered Cost Per Tonne of Dry Matter

Seed price per kilogram is the wrong number to optimise. What decides profitability is the delivered cost per tonne of dry matter, and that calculation has to include establishment cost spread across the useful life of the stand, irrigation, cutting and handling, and the value of nitrogen left in the soil.

Run that calculation honestly and alfalfa usually looks cheaper than its seed price suggests, because the establishment cost is divided across several years of production. Berseem often looks more expensive per season on establishment, but it earns that back through speed, through the summer crop it does not displace, and through soil improvement ahead of the next cereal.

One more factor deserves attention: seed quality is not where to economise. A cheap lot with 70 percent germination, weed contamination, or a dodder problem will cost far more in reseeding, herbicide and lost cuttings than the money saved at purchase. Insist on certification and, where the volume justifies it, on a pre-shipment sample.

So Which Forage Is Better?

Choose alfalfa if you have deep, well-drained soil, a hot or dry climate with irrigation, a multi-year horizon for the field, a herd whose ration needs maximum protein, and hay production in the plan.

Choose berseem clover if the field is only free for the cool season, the ground is heavy or mildly saline, you want to be cutting within two months, you graze animals directly and want lower bloat risk, or you are building soil ahead of a cereal or cotton crop.

Choose both — and most successful mixed operations do — with alfalfa as the perennial backbone and berseem filling the cool-season gap, nursing new alfalfa stands, and lifting output from old ones. That is not a compromise between two options. It is the arrangement that gets the most out of both.
